The men’s 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will begin a day earlier than originally intended, allowing the host nation to play the first match against Ecuador, FIFA revealed Thursday.

As a result of a unanimous vote by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, the tournament will now begin on November 20 instead of November 21, when three games, including Senegal versus the Netherlands, were originally scheduled.

“The FIFA World Cup 2022 will begin with an even greater celebration for local and international fans, as the host nation Qatar will now play Ecuador on Sunday, November 20 at 19:00 as part of a standalone event,” FIFA stated in a statement.

The decision will assure “the continuation of a long-standing tradition” in which either the hosts or the defending champions play in the opening World Cup match.

It “followed an evaluation of the competition and operational implications, as well as a comprehensive engagement process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country,” the statement stated.

As a result, the match between Senegal and the Netherlands has been moved from the afternoon of November 21 to the evening. However, commencing on November 14, the release timeframe for players will remain same.

FIFA also stated that “ticket holders will be notified via email that the affected matches have been rescheduled, and that their tickets will remain valid regardless of the new date/time.”

Friday’s release of a statement by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy of the Qatar 2022 World Cup confirmed the support of the host nation for the decision.

FIFA examined the impact of this decision on fans. We will collaborate to ensure a seamless competition for the affected fans,” the statement read.

Qatar is all set. We look forward to welcome the globe to a FIFA World Cup edition that will go down in history.”

The new dates for the tournament are November 20 to December 18.
